Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a foley artist working on a film set at a carnival and preparing to add sounds to each of the scenes.

  1. If the film shows 5 seconds of a roller-coaster ride, how many frames will this be?
Video film speed = 30 frames per second
    5 seconds x 30 frames per second = 150 frames
So, 5 seconds of the roller-coaster ride will take 150 frames on video.
  2. You watch 95 frames of a person rolling cotton candy in a tub, handing it to the customer, and then another 85 frames of the customer eating the candy. How much time does this sequence take?
    95 frames + 85 frames = 180 frames
Video film speed = 180 frames per second
    180 frames/ 30 frames = 6 seconds
The entire sequence takes 6 seconds.

According to foley artist Mike Keeping, complex math doesn't come into play in this field. However, you will have to know the basics. Keeping says, "basic math skills are what you need. Know how to add."
