Timing directors face such creative choices all the time. So they must be decisive. "That's what creativity is all about," says Jon McClenahan. Before starting his own animation studio, he worked as a timing director.

And the consequences of a wrong decision may be visible to millions of people in full color and surround sound. "Timing is an under-appreciated skill because timing can really make things work well," McClenahan says. "If [scenes] are not timed right, then people will begin to look for what's wrong."

You are a timing director. You are working on an animated cartoon that is 30 minutes long. You realize that you may have too much dialog. You talk to your producer, and she asks you to recommend a solution to the problem.

There are two ways to deal with this problem. You can either cut some dialog, or you could cut the length of the scenes with no dialog. What do you do?
