Real-Life Communication

"Communication skills are paramount in this profession," says gerontologist Eileen Reilly. "Especially being able to talk to older people without being patronizing."

"Verbal communication skills in communicating with seniors are vital while written skills are important within administration -- report writing and grant writing," says gerontologist Bill Krever.

According to Careers in Aging, from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), there are seven roles for gerontologists:

  1. Research
  2. Management and administration
  3. Advocacy
  4. Education and training
  5. Direct service provision
  6. Program planning and evaluation
  7. Marketing and product development
