Real-Life Decision Making

Gerontologist Eileen Reilly enjoys working with the elderly. "Old people give me more than I can give them by virtue of their sage and wisdom of life."

Because she cares so much, she says it is sometimes hard to stay optimistic "while working with old, infirm and dying people."

An elderly woman has been referred to you by her estate manager because she has failing health. After nine months at your facility, she is diagnosed with lung cancer, but she is in denial.

She will not take treatments and refers to her condition as the flu. You gently remind her that she has cancer.

What do you do?
