Most economic development officers have at least a four-year undergraduate degree, usually, though not necessarily, in economics. Others have educational backgrounds in planning or business administration.

Marketing is another course of study students might consider.

Get some experience. "Try to get involved on a volunteer basis in some aspect of your community," advises economic development officer Roland Pidgeon. "Development people are involved. You need to understand your community."

Ongoing education is important in this field. The national associations offer accredited courses.

Once you're in the field, you may consider getting professional certification. Various bodies offer these designations, including the International Economic Development Council, the National Council for Urban Economic Development and the Economic Development Institute.
