Additional Information

You need a degree in pharmacology to work in technical occupations. It generally takes four years to complete. Most technologists and research associates have a master's degree. People who work as independent researchers or in universities generally have their doctoral degree.

In the past, pharmacologists generally completed a post-doctoral fellowship (which takes about six years to finish) before becoming a full-fledged research scientist and professor at a university. "This isn't becoming as necessary because companies are so eager to hire people," says Lisa Mullany. She is a pharmacology PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota.
