Real-Life Math -- Solution

The sooner you get this figured out, the sooner you can get on with this job and the rest of your day. You get out a scratch pad and determine what you'll need:

square yards x ounces per square yard = total ounces
40 fluid ounces = 1 quart

1,500 sq. yd. x 5 oz. per sq. yd. = 7,500 oz.
7,500 / 40 = 187.5 quarts

Now figure out how much concentrate you'll need:

Total ounces divided by mixing solution ratio = ounces of concentrate

7,500 / 5 = 1,500 oz
1,500 / 40 = 37.5 quarts

Now, figure out the difference to figure out how much water you need:

187.5 quarts - 37.5 quarts = 150 quarts

You now know that to do this job you're going to need 187.5 quarts of mixed solution. This means mixing 37.5 quarts of concentrate with 150 quarts of water.

This is exactly the type of math you'll use every day, says Fran Smith of a pest control association.

"It's not advanced math, but there are calculations that have to be done," she says. Be prepared to handle these math questions -- because they'll be on your licensing exam!
