Real-Life Communication

"Communication is huge in this field. You must communicate with the other staff in the spa, and client consultations are mandatory. You have to know in what state of health you client is and what has changed since the last time you saw them, in case of possible contraindications to the service they would like you to provide," says Amy Lee. She is an esthetician with her own traveling spa business.

You have to take a client's medical history into account for some treatments. For example, aloe is often used in spa treatments. But aloe may be a problem if the client is taking anti-arrhythmic medication for the heart. A client taking that kind of medication should consult a doctor before going ahead with aloe spa treatments. People often like to keep their medical information private.

Many clients do not understand why their esthetician needs to know about their medical conditions or treatments. Communication is important not only to find out about risk factors, but to explain to the client why you need to ask these questions.

Clients need to feel comfortable with you. You want them to have a good experience. But safety is the top concern.

Write down what you will say to a client who is coming to you for the first time. How will you explain your medical questions?
