Real-Life Decision Making

The decisions accounting technicians make can have a direct impact on a company's bottom line. But because accounting technicians usually work under the supervision of more senior accountants, they rarely have the authority to make far-ranging decisions.

The situations that accounting technicians face are often of an ethical nature, says Pat Rittenbach. She teaches accounting. "Often they are told by their managers to do something that is not right," she says. "And then they have to make decisions."

A client of yours runs a local restaurant. It is doing great since it reopened some time ago, selling close to 5,000 meals a month at an average price of $5.75. The restaurant is doing so well that there are often long lines outside.

The owner wants to sell 6,500 meals a month, or even more. But the owner is not sure because it would require remodeling the restaurant, and hiring and training new staff, which are big expenses. He wants to consider all options before making a decision. So you look at the restaurant's books and present your client with three options.

Which option would you recommend?
