Real-Life Decision Making

The renovations for the town's shopping mall are supposed to be completed by the end of the summer. That time is fast approaching, and the rush is on to not only complete the building, but to tear up and reorganize the parking lot.

You have been ordered to rip up the existing sidewalks and pavement as quickly as you can. "It's hard in an urban area because you have to know how high you can lift your bucket so you don't touch wires and figure out how much room you have to maneuver," says Ron O'Connor. He is a heavy equipment operator.

In this case, you also need to know if there are any underground wires. "Where's the supervisor?" you ask one of the construction workers. He tells you he's gone for the afternoon, and asks if he can help.

You tell the worker that you want to make sure the supervisor has called to locate any underground wires. "Oh, you don't have to wait for that," the worker assures you. "I heard him say there aren't any wires. It's OK to just start digging."

Normally, you wait until the supervisor has assured you there are no wires. But this worker seems to know what he is talking about. And this is a rush job.

What do you do?
