Beyond High School

Here's a list of programs that you should consider if you're interested in this career:

Education Level

Education training and experience are required at different levels for success in different occupations.

Bachelor's degree

Geographers with a bachelor’s degree qualify for most entry-level jobs and for positions with the federal government. Geographers outside of the federal government may need a master’s degree in geography or in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Some positions allow candidates to substitute work experience or GIS proficiency for an advanced degree. Top research positions usually require a Ph.D., or a master’s degree and several years of relevant work experience.

Insider Info

Additional Information

You'll need at least a bachelor's degree in geographic science.

The Association of American Geographers (AAG) suggests that while you're still studying in university, you should develop a professional interest in a specific field or public issues. Develop that background, your knowledge and contacts over two or three years, the AAG says.

Extra Requirements

Although not required, certification may indicate professional expertise. The GIS Certification Institute and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing both offer certification in GIS.
