You are a water treatment plant operator for a small town. The town is considering replacing its current sewage treatment system with a more environmentally friendly and efficient system.

You look over the proposed system. You must figure out whether it will be large enough to serve your community now and in the future.

"It depends on what work we are doing at a specific time, but we use math on the job," says George Martin, a water treatment plant operator. "We have to figure out things like volume, surface area and that sort of thing."

One of the new rectangular holding tanks measures 10 feet by 12 feet by 8 feet.

The old holding tank has a volume of 990 cubic feet. It is 11 feet long and 10 feet wide.

  1. What is the volume of the new tank?
  2. What is the height of the old tank?
  3. Which tank has a greater volume?

Remember: volume = length x width x height
