Real-Life Decision Making

A receptionist cannot anticipate the problems they may be faced with throughout the day. "When you are dealing with people, on the phone or face to face, you never know what to expect," says Diane Clement. She is the receptionist for a medical clinic. "That's what makes the job so exciting."

You are a receptionist in a hospital. A patient who was just discharged is leaving to go to the airport. She is flying home to visit her family and is very excited about the trip.

You and the other receptionists are very busy at the front desk. A short time later, you notice that the patient forgot her only suitcase behind one of the sofas in the waiting area.

You receive a frantic call from the airport. The patient's flight is leaving in an hour. She doesn't have a car. Her medication is in the suitcase and she needs it to get better. She is supposed to take it four times a day.

One of your co-workers stores the suitcase safely behind the desk. You must find a solution to the patient's problem.

When it comes to customer service, explains Clement, "giving your customers options that they can choose from is often the best way to solve the problem."

What do you do?
