You've been hired to create a sculpture of a glacier for a museum. It's going to be on permanent display above the entrance.

You not only have to create the sculpture, but also ensure it's safe. The museum won't be happy (nor their insurance company) if your creation -- made of large pieces of glass -- falls on some unsuspecting patrons.

You've calculated that the maximum weight that can be supported is 3,500 lbs. Your design calls for 18 pieces of bent glass. Six of the pieces weigh 120 kg each, five of them weigh 87 kg each, and seven of them weigh 45 kg each.

  1. What will be the total weight of the sculpture (in pounds)? Is it light enough to be hung above the entrance? (Remember: 1 kg = 2.205 pounds)
  2. By what percentage is it over or under the maximum weight?
  3. How many more of the smallest pieces could be added to the sculpture?
