Real-Life Math

Your many years of hard work have finally paid off. You've just been drafted to a professional basketball team!

After years of scraping by as you developed your basketball skills, you're finally going to make some real money. You decide to figure out how much you'll likely earn from playing basketball over the next few years.

To estimate your total salary, you use the following information:

  • You know that for each season, which lasts three months, you'll earn a base salary of $50,000.
  • You expect your career will last eight years. This is the average for professional basketball.
  • If you make first team, meaning you're a starting player, you'll earn a $15,000 bonus. You're confident you'll make first team every year.
  • If you are chosen most valuable player, you'll earn a $20,000 bonus. You are optimistic here too. You predict you'll earn MVP twice.
  • If your team makes the play-offs, you'll get an additional $5,000. You predict this will happen six times.

Using the above information, answer the following questions:

  1. How much do you predict you'll earn over your eight-year career?
  2. How much does that work out to per year, on average?
  3. If your team makes the play-offs only twice, and you're never selected MVP, how much will you earn in total?
