Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You do some further tests on Travis.

This is the real-life decision made by Dr. Geoff Withers. He's a pediatric physician subspecializing in gastroenterology.

Travis shows signs of possibly having a disease. The fact that his abdominal pain is accompanied by weight loss and vomiting would likely prompt a gastroenterologist to do further testing.

"We look for other signs of disease -- such as vomiting, weight loss, or changes on blood testing, such as anemia," says Withers. "That's the sort of decision that we make very often, every day.

"If the child has stopped growing, has lost weight, and has changes on blood testing, then it's a clear-cut example of [us needing] to go on and find out what the problem is."
