Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell the mother to bring Travis back if the vomiting returns.

This is not the decision a gastroenterologist is likely to make. Vomiting and weight loss are possible signs of a more serious problem. It's possible Travis has a disease such as Crohn's disease, also called inflammatory bowel disease.

"North America has one of the highest populations in Crohn's disease. It's increasingly becoming more common," says Dr. Geoff Withers. He's a pediatric physician subspecializing in gastroenterology.

By waiting, Travis could become sicker and perhaps suffer gastrointestinal bleeding. If a stomach disease is left unchecked, surgery may be required and the child could experience growth delay.
