Real-Life Math

One of the duties of a brand inspector is to collect an inspection fee. This is a fee for each head of cattle.

You have a real incentive to get your figures right. "We charge fees for our inspection, and it's so much a head," says Debbie Deter. "You have to add and multiply every day."

If the amount you calculate and the amount of money you collect don't match, the difference could come out of your own pocket!

Here's an example of the type of math problem you might work in your day as a brand inspector:

During the week, you've inspected 530 heads of cattle at 9 different sites. For each site you visit, there is a $10 service charge. And the fee for inspection is $0.90 per head.

At the end of your week, you find you have collected $547. Did you collect the correct amount?
