The excited nitrogen has a mass (energy) of 13143.5720 MeV
Normal nitrogen has a mass (energy) of 13134.3997 MeV

To find out what energy the gamma ray must have, subtract the energy of the normal nitrogen from the excited nitrogen.

13143.5720 MeV - 13134.3997 MeV = 9.1723 MeV

Then convert it to electron volts.

9.1723 MeV = 9,172,300 eV

The gamma ray must have exactly 9,172,300 eV of energy in order to excite the nitrogen. Now you can detect quantities of nitrogen, and potential bombs, hidden in luggage. Think of it: this calculation can save lives.
