Real-Life Decision Making

You are a figure skating coach for people of all different ages, with all sorts of goals for their figure skating careers. Some want to be national champions, others just want to have fun.

Some of your students are very young children. "In this sport, you have to push early if you want your students to achieve in each level because there are age limits," says Joanne Canow, a figure skating coach.

Alanna is a young skater who has loads of talent. As a coach, you have been watching her progress and have been impressed. Her parents are also pleased, and ask about getting Alanna started in the competitive program.

Because Alanna has so much natural talent, she would be able to glide her way through the different test levels. You talk to Alanna about the exciting possibilities, but are surprised by her answer. "No. I don't want to compete -- ever," she says stamping her foot. "Don't ruin skating for me. Tell my parents I don't want the pressure."

What do you do?
