Real-Life Communication
You work for a big telephone company. It is involved in the installation
of a dedicated telecommunications line for a big customer.
As part
of the installation team, you have been given the task of writing status reports.
These
reports include descriptions of problems you have encountered, how well the
installation is going, and what tests have been done so far. The reports are
sent to the project director of the customer company.
They know very
little about telecommunications, so the report must explain what's happening
without being too technical.
Write a memo describing the progress on
the installation with the following facts:
- 50 percent complete
- Loopback test completed
- Transmission test completed
- The lines were affected by moisture and the team compensated by increasing
signal strength
A loopback test is the transmission of a signal through a telecommunications
system, whether it's audio or radio. It is done in such a way that the signal
returns to the originator.
The strength of the signal is predictable,
so if the strength is different, then compensation is necessary. For example,
if there is moisture in the cables, the signal strength is weakened and you
need to amplify the signal.
When the moisture is taken care of, the
signals become too loud and you need to reduce the signal strength.
