Real-Life Communication

Communication is critical for online community hosts. The entire job is about communicating and moderating the communication of others.

Nick Bouton designed and developed Protagonize.com. He hosts and moderates the creative fiction writing community. He says that in any community website, the moderators must be involved in the discussions going on around the site.

"If you're a faceless entity just sitting back and not participating, users will feel alienated and may either run amok or completely abandon your site altogether," says Bouton. He adds that users will have no reason to return if the user base is not self-sustaining. And even in an established community with a large user base, moderators still need to weed out bad content and troublesome users.

You notice that one of the members of the site has been posting a lot recently. You also notice that the member often uses profanity in his posts. The forum does not encourage the use of profanity as there are many younger members. You need to find a way to communicate to the foul-mouthed member that he needs to tone down his language when posting to the forum.
