Real-Life Decision Making

You are a mechanical faller. You are out in the woods clearing a block of land that is to be used for a power line.

Environmental laws prohibit you from cutting through a creek. When you cross a creek, you are supposed to do something called a snow fill or a logging fill, depending on the season. If government inspectors discover that a logging company has cut through this creek bed, your employer will receive a big fine.

It is difficult to tell where the creek bed is, due to snow cover. You are in a location that you think is safe to cut, but you are not 100 percent sure.

You pull out your two-way radio and try to contact your boss for assistance. Something is wrong with the radio and you cannot reach him.

Now you are faced with a dilemma. If you accidentally cut through the creek bed, your employer will be in trouble, and you might get fired. If you go back to camp and try to locate your boss to ask for instruction, you will waste a lot of time.

What do you do?
