Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You could try other ways of communicating.

For example, you could:

  • Draw a map or picture with symbols representing hazardous areas, etc.
  • Ask other crewmembers if anyone speaks the man's preferred language.
  • Demonstrate the use of the whistle and the radio.
  • Physically go around with the man and demonstrate what to do.
  • Ask your employer to find a translator.
  • Use hand symbols and gestures to clarify certain points.

Can you think of any other ways?

"Communication is very important," says faller Ted Simmons. "I carry a two-way radio and check in with other crewmembers regularly."
