Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. What are the heights of the 2 trees?

    Let x represent the height of the shorter tree. Then x + (x + 0.20x) will represent the height of the taller tree.

    x + (x + 0.20x) = 268 feet
    x + 1.2x = 268 feet
    2.2x = 268 feet
    x = 121.8 feet

    The shorter tree is 121.8 feet high. How tall is the other tree?

    268 feet - 121.8 feet = 146.2 feet

    The second tree is 146.2 feet tall.

  2. What distance must you be from the nearest faller for each tree?

    You know you should be 2 tree lengths apart when you fell a tree.

    121.8 feet x 2 = 243.6 feet

    146.2 x 2 = 292.4 feet

    You must be 243.6 feet away from the nearest faller when you fell the shorter tree. You must be 292.4 feet away from the nearest faller when you fell the taller tree.

"When you are falling trees, you have to think about angles and distances," says Ted Simmons, a hand faller. "You have to use all the safety measures."
