Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to build a retaining wall.

You want to keep the playing area where you originally envisioned it. You go with a retaining wall around the green instead of moving the area further away from the water.

However, you take a look at the budget and realize that if you build the wall, it'll cut into the set amount of funds you've agreed to for payment. Because the owner won't pay more than the original amount you contracted for, you're now in a position of either continuing to build the wall and going over budget, or opting for a less expensive way to contain the water.

At this point, proceeding with the construction of the wall is a no-win option -- and one that will end up losing your firm money. "The cost factor can be a deterrent, as in the case of building a retaining wall around a green," says Pittman. "There are the issues of drainage, improper size, improper irrigation -- many factors."
