Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here's the solution based on the variables you've been given to figure out the area of the golf green:

To find the average length of the radii, add them up and divide by 8 (the number of radii):

Sum of the radii = 45 + 43 + 39 + 44 + 49 + 52 + 47 + 41
Sum of the radii (or total of sections) = 360

Mean radius = sum / number of radii
Mean radius = 360 / 8
Mean radius = 45 feet

To determine the area, use the equation:

Area = 3.14 x r2
Area = 3.14 x 452
Area = 6,358.5 square feet

Designing and developing a golf course means using a lot of math. Hunter Pittman, a designer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, says there are many ways math is used in his job. "You can use math to estimate the area of a golf green, [or] figure out the percentage of a slope for grading the rise of a slope over the run."
