Real-Life Math

You are a manager with a local golf course.

You received a phone call yesterday from Dagwood's Domestics, a very successful home appliance company in the area. You have been asked to give this client a price quote for a group of 40 people.

"When you hold tournaments or have a large number of people playing as a group, some kind of discount is usually customary -- this is when your math juggling skills come into play," says Jack Spinelli. He is a golf club manager.

Out of the 40 people who will be attending, 21 will be playing 9 holes, while the remaining 19 will be playing 18 holes. The supervisor of Dagwood's has allowed for the rental of 15 electric golf carts, and for 10 pull carts.

On top of this, you have promised a 10 percent discount for the group rate. Based on these figures, you must figure out the amount you will charge.

Here are some prices:

  • A round of 9 holes costs $12
  • A round of 18 holes costs $24
  • Electric carts cost $15 each
  • Pull carts cost $4.50 each
