Real-Life Math

A and R reps need to use numbers not only in music, but also during the production process of music.

Math is used in budgeting overall production costs of records and videos, as well as promotion costs.

You are an A and R rep who has just signed a new band. You have pitched enough songs for them to begin recording their new album, and now all you have to do is figure out which studio to rent.

You visited 3 different studios and were equally happy with their locations and equipment. Since the industry has been slow, they all offer you discounts. You need to figure out which studio has the best deal.

You estimate that you need 100 hours of studio time.

Studio A

The first 50 hours cost $85 each. For the next 25 hours you get 10 percent off, and then for any additional hours you get a 20 percent discount.

Studio B

For every 10 hours you purchase, you get one hour free. Each hour costs $105.

Studio C

Each hour costs $95, but you can get a discount of 15 percent.
