Real-Life Math

Paleobotanists and palynologists use math to help them determine the approximate age of fossils. They do this with carbon 14 dating.

This is the principle. Plants alive today give off 15 beta radiations of carbon 14 per minute. Because C14 has a half-life of 5,730 years -- meaning it decreases by 50 percent every 5,730 years -- scientists can determine the approximate age of something by measuring the amount of C14 left.

Estimate the age of the plant samples that give off the following readings:

Sample 1, lillypad found aboard wrecked ship: 7.5 beta rads per minute

Sample 2, fern found inside home buried by ancient landslide: 1.75 beta rads per minute
