In the pool and spa industry, a certified service professional is called a CSP. Some colleges offer certification in pool operation. Local groups and schools may also offer training. "Or some of it can be self-taught, if you enjoy the work enough," says operator Bruce Carlson. Check with local colleges and vocational schools for training and certification courses.

"To be proficient at pool and spa work takes a lot of practical hands-on type of training," adds Carlson.

Pool and spa operators need licenses if they plan to do electrical and plumbing work. These are granted by state governments, usually following a short certification course. Pool and spa operators also have to receive a license to store chemicals.
