Real-Life Decision Making

Pediatric nurses are highly trained professionals. In many ways, they are as qualified as pediatricians are to care for young people. They can use their own judgment. This is especially true in emergency situations.

Pediatric nurses at hospitals are often the first medical personnel to encounter a young person in need of fast medical attention.

You are a pediatric nurse on night duty at a major metropolitan hospital. You get word that a van carrying young people home from a field trip has crashed.

More than a dozen young people are injured. Emergency personnel at the scene of the accident say none of the injuries is life-threatening. You need to make a decision on how to handle the coming influx of patients.

You have two other pediatric nurses on staff and two more on call. Four pediatricians are on call as well. All those on call can be at the hospital within half an hour.

What do you do?
