Real-Life Math

Marianne is ordering a wig from your company. She asks for instructions on how to measure her head so that she gets a good fit. The three measurements she needs to take are: circumference, front to back, and temple to temple.

You tell Marianne how to take the measurements.

For the circumference, she should start at the front and measure around the hairline. For the front to back measurement, you tell her to measure down the center of her head to the back of the nape, generally 1 inch below the base of the skull.

For the temple to temple measurement, you tell Marianne to simply hold the tape measure at her right temple (level with the eye) and measure the front hairline to the left temple.

"It's important to take accurate measurements," says Lora Collins. She is a wig specialist. "We give our customers instructions on how to take head measurements."

Marianne follows your instructions, and calls back with these 3 measurements:

Circumference: 55 cm
Front to back: 36 cm
Temple to temple: 34 cm

Which wig size should you make for Marianne? Your choices are petite, average or large.

Petite:
Circumference: 21 inches
Front to back: 13.25 inches
Temple to temple: 13 inches

Average
Circumference: 21.5 inches
Front to back: 14.25 inches
Temple to temple: 13.5 inches

Large
Circumference: 23 inches
Front to back: 15.25 inches
Temple to temple: 14 inches

Marianne has given you the measurements in metric. Convert her measurements to find out which wig size you should make for her. Remember: 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.
