Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could say:

"Thank you for calling, Mrs. Sykora. We are aware of the problem and are working as fast as possible to restore power. What has happened is a truck on the highway has struck a power pole. We'll be restoring power within two hours, once the police have cleared the area. Your home and several others on your street are affected. We apologize for the inconvenience, but I'm sure you understand."

Power systems operators talk to the public when problems come up. Staying professional is essential. "We do not get in a verbal confrontation with anybody," says John Stolley, a control center supervisor.

Power systems operators also communicate regularly with various departments within the utility. They give directions to the line crew that fixes equipment. They share information with their communications department and management. Clarity and precision are essential.

"You have people you're directing to go out and assist in recovering from an outage," says Stolley. "Those people are waiting for direction from you and they need to know exactly what you want out of them. Plus, the consumers are wanting their service returned as soon as possible, so speed is essential, but it's not the premier thing. Safety is number one."
