  1. You can sell 22 megawatts at $43 per megawatt, or 17 megawatts at $45 per megawatt.

Megawatts x price per megawatt = total price
    22 x 43 = $946
    17 x 45 = $765

Selling 22 megawatts at $43 per megawatt will earn more.

  2. You can sell 10 megawatts at $24 per megawatt, or 12 megawatts at $22 per megawatt.

Megawatts x price per megawatt = total price
    10 x 24 = $240
    12 x 22 = $264

Selling 12 megawatts at $22 per megawatt will earn more.

  3. You can sell 14 megawatts at $35 per megawatt, or 18 megawatts at $33 per megawatt.

Megawatts x price per megawatt = total price
    14 x 35 = $490
    18 x 33 = $594

Selling 18 megawatts at $33 per megawatt will earn more.

Control center supervisor John Stolley says power systems operators deal with numbers all the time.

"Everything you're dealing with in the control center is number-oriented," Stolley says. "You have values coming from your substations. You have values coming from your power plants. And you have to utilize those numbers to make economic decisions.

"You won't survive in this position with average math skills, because mistakes are critical. Usually, they lead to financial ramifications for the utility."
