Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You sell the painting to Susan because she is a preferred client.

Susan is somewhat surprised because she knows the first-come, first-serve rule.

"I would have understood if you told me you had to sell the painting to Mario," she says. But she is happy to have the painting.

"If you have two good clients, it makes the decision even more difficult," says art dealer Wendy Wong.

Mario, however, is furious. "I was first!" he yells. It turns out he was about to buy four paintings from you that day. Now, he has decided he doesn't want anything from you.

"You have to make a good decision and try to be fair," says Wong. "And you have to compensate the other client by offering them another painting at a special price."
