Real-Life Math

Someone has brought you a diamond. They are broke and would like you to assess the diamond's worth so they can sell it. First, you must determine the carat weight of the stone. There is a formula for this.

Second, you have to apply that weight to the current price per carat on the market.

To determine the weight, you have to measure the diameter and depth in millimeters. The formula is as follows:

Carat weight = diameter squared x depth x 0.0061

The figure 0.0061 is a constant for round gems. If it was oval, you would use 0.0058.

The diameter turns out to be 5.7 mm. The depth is 3.66 mm.

The going rate per carat is $2,978.

How much should this person be getting for their diamond?
