Additional Information

Many people enter this job through related training and experience. However, a college diploma or university degree is a must. But there is no single program that directly prepares future advertising production managers.

Publishing programs and classes would put you on the right path, says Karen Eskew, the production manager for the American Psychological Association.

"You need to know everything about the publishing and printing process," she says, including the file formats used in the industry.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook says that, "For advertising management positions ... [a] course of study should include, for example, marketing, consumer behavior, market research, sales, communication methods and technology, and visual arts, and art history and photography." Most workers have several years of related experience before advancing to management.
