Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell him, "Hey buddy, this is a major piece of art. Get this thing appraised."

This is the real-life decision made by Kimball Sterling. He told the person to have the art appraised. "It would have been unethical to buy the piece."

The biggest dilemma in the appraisal business, says Sterling, comes to those who are appraisers and buyers. These two businesses can be a conflict of interest. "Up front, you clearly ask if they want you to appraise this piece or if they want you to buy it."

Sterling says that if he believes someone is not aware of the value, he tells them to get it appraised first. "I tell them that they can hire me as an appraiser, but if they do, I can no longer buy the art," he says.
