Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You send the flowers from your new customer.

You don't tell him that Cathy already has a boyfriend. This is the real-life decision made by Janet McCleod.

McCleod decided that it wasn't her place to discuss the card or the flowers that a young man was planning to send.

"I'd never say anything when a customer sends flowers to a lady friend. When they write something personal in the card and I know both of the people involved, I never say a word," McCleod says.

This situation isn't uncommon to a small-town florist like McCleod.

"I know all the people involved in the flower-giving process and that can be challenging. You often develop a rapport with your customers, and in a small town that can cause some problems."

McCleod insists that her policy should stick in almost any circumstances, even if someone gets their feelings hurt. "I believe it's a respect thing in this situation. If the roles were reversed, I would want the same. It's all a part of professional conduct."
