Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell Brent that he shouldn't send the flowers to Cathy.

Cathy already has a boyfriend and if Brent sent her flowers it would only cause him embarrassment. You decide to let him know yourself and save him from Cathy, who might hurt his feelings.

You kindly let him know that Cathy is already taken. From the moment you say the words, you regret mentioning it. Brent is silent on the other end of the line for a few moments. Obviously, Brent didn't appreciate you helping him with his personal life. When he cuts you off shortly and hangs up the phone, you realize that you've lost a customer and a new friend.

Confidentiality is an important part of the job. Interfering in a customer's private life is not part of a flower designer's job duties. Florists design arrangements and run a business; they don't offer advice unless it's asked for.

"These situations are difficult when I know both of the parties involved. It's hard not to say anything, but that's the only way to remain professional. I never reveal what a customer writes on a card," says florist Janet McCleod.
