Football Referee

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication

You are refereeing a high school football game. During the game, you observe that a player, Don, is obviously becoming frustrated with the way the game is going. He is beginning to make comments towards his opponents that could create ill will, or even cause a fight to break out.

You can ignore the comments and wait until the conduct is bad enough to penalize. Or you can choose to communicate with the player verbally and try to settle him down. You want him to focus on the game and avoid a penalty.

High school football referees are expected to help the athletes learn good sportsmanship and help them become good leaders. You know that if you go and tell Don to settle down, he will not learn anything and he will probably get even angrier. You want to find a way to talk to him so he will see for himself that his actions are wrong.

Of course, if he ignores you, in the end you will have to give his team a penalty.

What do you say?
