You tell the distributor off.

You explain, in no uncertain terms, that you don't need his catalog or his advice. "You're not the only distributor in the country!" you yell as you hang up on him.

You send out copies of the comic book to all the other distributors you can think of. All of them come back rejected with notes indicating that the lettering is too hard to read.

Finally, you end up hiring someone to redo the lettering for you and one of the smaller distributors agrees to carry your comic book. It's a really eye-opening experience for you, and you vow to be more professional in the future.

"It's important to remember that even though you're an artist, you're also involved in a business," says comic illustrator Jenny Frank.

Scott Chantler is a freelance comic illustrator. He says decision-making skills are important, especially when it comes to making business decisions.

"Every decision I make affects whether or not I can buy groceries the following week," he says. "I have to wear a lot of hats and make a lot of important decisions every day about a lot of different things."
