Real-Life Math -- Solution
You want to figure out how many calories a 25-year-old woman who
is 5'5" is allowed each day to maintain a weight of 120 pounds. Then
you want to calculate the number of calories a 25-year-old man who is 6 feet
tall is allowed each day to maintain a weight of 160 pounds.
First,
you have to convert to metric.
Woman:
5'5" = 65 inches
65
inches x 2.54 cm per inch = 165.1 cm
120 pounds x 0.4536 kg
per pound = 54.4 kg
Man:
6 feet = 72 inches
72 inches
x 2.54 cm per inch = 182.8 cm
160 pounds x 0.4536 kg
per pound = 72.6 kg
Now you can plug the values into the equations.
Woman:
BMR
= 655 + (9.6 x weight in kg) + (1.8 x height in cm) - (4.7 x age in years)
BMR
= 655 + (9.6 x 54.4 kg) + (1.8 x 165.1 cm) - (4.7 x 25)
BMR =
655 + 522.2 + 297.2 - 117.5
BMR = 1,356.9
The woman
is allowed 1,356.9 calories per day.
Man: BMR = 66 + (13.7
x weight in kg) + (5 x height in cm) - (6.8 x age in years)
BMR
= 66 + (13.7 x 72.6 kg) + (5 x 182.8 cm) - (6.8 x 25)
BMR = 66
+ 994.6 + 914 - 170
BMR = 1,804.6
The man is allowed 1,804.6calories per day.
