Real-Life Decision Making

You are a business ethicist and have been called in by an employer to help him figure out what to do in a situation that has arisen at his real estate company.

One of his employees, Sandra, got accidental access to information about a client's private plan to purchase and develop a large tract of land. In the documentation, Sandra learned that the region of land for development was in an area near her home.

Distressed by the idea that the rural setting around her home was going to be developed into businesses, Sandra rushed out and bought the land before the private client could purchase it. Sandra bought the land in her husband's name.

The employer wants to know if Sandra's actions are right or wrong -- that is, he wants to know if her actions are a conflict of interest.

"A conflict of interest arises in a situation in which a person has a private or personal interest and this influences and interferes with what she does at the office," says Michael McDonald, an ethicist.

What do you do?
